How to deliver a one hour talk without looking into your script.

During President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony in 2009, he spoke concisely for over 22 minutes without using a teleprompter, looking into his scripts or stumbling over any of his words. How he did it was something that caught my attention.

From that day, I made up my mind to become a pro-speaker.

Today I can deliver a lesson or a speech for hours without looking into my scripts. How I do it is what I am about to share with you.

Here is the strategy:

1. Master your content.

This most important step in every effective presentation is content mastery. Failure to master your content to fingertips calls for timidity in delivery.

Moreover, if your content is weak, your presentation will be weak.

Charge your content with stories, examples, supporting evidence and simple analogies.

2. Carefully map out your content.

This step trains your brain to organize the information chronologically.

 3. Find your voice.

There is power in the sound of your voice. It gives uniqueness and authenticity to your presentation. Replace “odd” words in your content with words that sound natural to you. This will help you to retain every bit of your content.

 4. Rehearse your presentation

Once you’ve converted the content into your preferred synonyms, practice how to deliver it from start to finish. This step programs your brain to assimilate the content. The more you practise, the more you stamp the content into your brain.

Conclusion

The ultimate secret to speaking off-the-cuff is to master your content, to map the content and to  practise how to present it in your own voice until it becomes your second nature.

It’s unrealistic to think you can copy my four step strategy and suddenly make a powerful presentation in your next survey, lesson or report.

If you do not have the desire to practice and evaluate your progress regularly, you will fail in the process.
